From Actionable Intelligence to Actionable Security Training & Testing
Expert Analysis Infogence Systems employs multi lingual counter terrorism experts who pose as extremists gaining access to closely guarded online terrorist networks. Our analysts monitor relevant websites and participate in forums, blogs and other online exchanges gaining valuable insight into ongoing terrorist activities and strategies.
Actionable Intelligence The intelligence gained from an Insight report is tailor made to provide up to date and relevant terrorism intelligence to an organisation. It contains a variety of information that can be used immediately to update and improve security structures, update training plans and increase awareness. These include:
Actionable Training Renful Premier Technologies has developed a set of training aids to work in conjunction with the Infogence Intelligence reports, thus allowing for the creation of a more focused training plan and better prepared security screeners. Using the terrorist intelligence gathered, Renful create inert simulant IEDs, which are often concealed within innocent items. These "drill items" are created by explosives experts and maintain the same colour, texture, density and CT number as the original IEDs mentioned in the counter terrorism publications.
As well as these "drill items" Renful Premier Technologies has developed a range of inert explosives simulants that also maintain the same characteristics as their originals. They were developed to provide security screeners with the knowledge, understanding and experience of items that, due to their danger and illegality, they would otherwise not get. These inert explosive simulants replicate each major type of explosive favored by terrorist groups around the world.
Explosives and Explosive Device XÂray and Identification Training kits have also been developed to provide training on specified types of IED’s and explosives. These include:
Each month on receiving an Infogence report, trainers can set up classroom sessions discussing current terrorist trends with their screeners as well as demonstrating the "drill item" and a simulant of any of the explosives discussed in the report. This enables security staff to familiarise themselves with the geometrical pattern, colour and texture of explosives and IED’s enabling them to gain valuable hand search skills, visual detection skills and experience of the latest types of explosives and explosive devices used by terrorists. Actionable Testing Once familiarisation training has been carried out on the replica explosives, x-ray detection training can commence. Renful Premier Technologies has developed Simfox, the x-ray image processor and x-ray training and testing simulator. As the inert explosives and explosive devices maintain the correct xÂray signature they can be scanned and uploaded on Simfox. Simfox is compatible with all major x-ray manufacturers and maintains each machine’s correct image enhancements and image resolution. It is therefore ideal for item familiarisation under xÂray with each "drill item" and simulant being passed through the simulator individually giving screeners the opportunity to study them under each image enhancement. Simfox is unique in that it allows xÂray trainers to pack bags themselves by choosing from a library of 1500+ items and bags. This means that once familiarisation training is over, trainers can conceal the "drill items" and simulants within bags making it as hard as they believe is necessary for screeners to detect. The fact that new bags can be created continually means students must rely on detection skills rather than image recall. Readiness Report It is important for training to be continually reviewed and updated to suit the needs of the individual screener. Simfox’s advanced statistical module enables each screener’s results to be quantified. It provides analysis of each screener’s performance on each test bag, session and course and offers comparisons with other students and groups. Screener performance can also be analysed based on their ability to detect certain types of threat items. For example, if a screener has a low detection rate on explosive devices, they can be given additional visualisation training and tailored Simfox training sessions to improve their detection skills and experience of certain items. In Conclusion The continuing innovations made by terrorists in explosive manufacturing and IED concealment means that security staff need to be provided with up to date and relevant intelligence that can be implemented into their security training so that they can know, understand and detect the threat. Knowing the Threat – Infogence Intelligence Reports provide up to date, detailed and relevant terrorism intelligence that can be used to update your security screeners knowledge and understanding of likely threats. Learning & Understanding the Threat – Renful Premier Technologies develop inert replicas / models of the explosive devices mentioned in our Infogence terrorist intelligence reports as well as inert simulants of all explosives currently used by terrorists. All these replica explosives are density and CT correct and are therefore ideal for both visual and x-ray familiarisation training. Training & Testing for Improved Threat Detection – Renful Premier Technologies has developed Simfox, the state of the art x-ray image processor and x ray training and testing simulator to provide security x ray screeners with the most adaptable, up to date and realistic training on the market today. It allows for up to date replica explosive devices detailed in the Infogence reports to be uploaded and concealed in an unlimited number of bags and given to students for training and testing. Fig.1: Tennis ball filled with TATP explosive and metal shrapnel. On receiving the report and the tennis ball IED replica, security trainers can set up classroom sessions with screeners. Here they can discuss the intelligence gathered in the report, increasing the knowledge, understanding and awareness of security screeners to possible threats. The tennis ball IED replica can be passed around enabling security staff to familiarise themselves with the geometrical pattern, colour and texture of it enabling them to gain valuable hand search skills and experience. The trainer can use the analysis from the report to teach screeners about the specific characteristics, dangers and security procedures on detecting it. The tennis ball can then be scanned onto Simfox, and shown to x-ray screeners. As Simfox allows for single items to be passed through its x-ray simulator it provides the ideal platform for screeners to compare and learn the xÂray characteristics of a normal tennis ball (below, left) and a TATP filled tennis ball (below, right).
Fig.2: On the left,an xÂray image of a normal tennis ball. On the right,an xÂray image of the TATP and shrapnel filled tennis ball IED. Once familiarisation training is over, Simfox allows security trainers to build bags themselves allowing them to conceal the tennis ball IED in as many bags as they want. Detection difficulty of the tennis ball IED can be determined by concealing the IED in different parts of the bag and under other items as shown below. The fact that trainers can train and test screeners with a continuous stream of new bags means that xÂray screeners cannot use image recall and must rely completely on their detection skills. Once testing has been carried out on detection of the tennis ball IED, trainers can then access Simfox’s statistical module to determine which screeners need more training and adapt their training and testing plan accordingly.
